It is really sad to think that India is grappling with the issue of female foeticide and screwed up sex ratio. It is more prevalent in some states than others where the male child is considered far more superior than the female child. Things in states like Punjab and Haryana are as bad as the caste system which is still vehemently prevalent in India.
Actually, there are two extremes as far as females are concerned. At one end is the one who is killed after the sex determination and at the other end of the spectrum is the alphawoman. Ya, the population of such women is on the rise and in fact in the metropolitan areas everyone wants to be one. So who is this alphawoman? She is the new age woman who knows what she wants and gets it too. She is mentally strong and financially not dependent on her husband or family. Uninhibited as she is, she finds her glory in things like getting the highest education possible, arranging her own wedding or honeymoon, and opting for a surrogate mother for her baby if she is too busy with work. And in this entire rigmarole, what the male partner feels about the whole thing and what all steps he might take – it is better not to comment on it.
Coming back to the male female sex ratio, it is but natural that if you kill females just because they are females, it will definitely come back to you. And in this case, our society is dealing with alphawomen rather that balanced sensible professionals and homemakers. Not to say that most of the women are like that but it is a rising trend that is catching on like a new trend in fashion.
But why do people want to kill their daughters even before they are born? This is due to another sad practice prevalent in our country known as dowry system. They feel that at first they have to spend on the girl’s education and then on her marriage so it is better not to have a girl at all. With boys, it is like that they will earn and take the family name forward so they are always welcome. However, things are changing bit by bit. Recently read that in a village in Punjab, they are glad to bear daughters. The logic is that they are quite self-sufficient and can take care of their children properly.
Both of the concepts of an alphawoman and female foeticide do not fit well in modern India. If only everyone can understand this…
