The wireless range of a Bluetooth device is 10m, So if you are within a 10m range, you can set it up to alert you.

From what i can remember, the article mentioned that the owner will be alerted of the burglary, but they didnt mention how exactly they would go about it. Since this product yet hasnt launched in the market, not much has been disclosed about it, but once it hits the market, we'd hear more like how the owner can be alerted etc.
