I was somewhat forced to share my views on the subject when I read a similar post on my brother’s blog Utopia. Is media turning into some kind of female fraternity? This is a potent question and one can witness a splurge of news channels both old and new employing journalists who are venturing into a domain which has been a field of the so-called intellectual males. So these women can discuss anything and everything and come up with their solutions to the worldly problems too!! It is very evident that the role models in media are soon changing, and how! We have journalists like Barkha Dutt, Sonali Chander, and a whole lot of upcoming faces on the tellly who are creating a whole new arena for themselves in this field. And yes, the viewer ship has also increased as these women also have there fan following. They are slowly and surely carving a niche for themselves. Gone are the days when only journos like Pronnoy Roy would rule the roost!
In fact, sometimes the politicians or the people being interviewed are compelled to provide the right kind of information when these girls bombard them with the right mix of questions. Just today I was watching an anchor inquire about the rape of a Japanese tourist from the tourism minister of Rajisthan. The minister was giving the usual typecast answers about holding meetings to find a solution to the problems, but this lady asked her bang on about whether they would be increasing the security force in the region, and the poor minister could not say no. So these small things do matter and these females pursuing the careers are indeed serious about it.
And I think this is not even worthwhile discussing that why are so many females venturing into this arena…Gone are the days when the girls would be confined to the roles of being either a doctor or a fashion designer. Even discussing something like the media being sabotaged by the female gender and soon the males would be extinct from the scene is kinda demeaning to them or i should say us, me being a woman too. In fact, if I reflect at the concept of blogging itself, I am sure even my parents would have frowned if I wanted to start my own blog say some five years back. They would have said things like “Why do you need to rant on the Internet…and would have come up with solutions like if u want to write, the write some meaningful article for some magazine. What kind of hobby is this?” But now things have changed drastically. I think today if you don’t have a blog you are not savvy enough!! It is just like any other hobby like painting or gardening. Ohh..i have digressed….coming back to the topic now.
I would say the way the ladies are treated in front of the camera is something to talk about. Today I was watching a program on Zee Sports just before the beginning of the cricket match between India and Pakistan. So there is this female anchor putting on her queries to Siddhu and Ajay Jadeja. I am sure Siddhu must have had a fight at home before coming on the show as he got really bugged when this lady asked him about the outcome of the match. He shouted back on her saying that “What do you think I am some kind of soothsayer or astrologer that I would be able to predict the outcome…” I was really shocked at the audacity of this comment. Someone has to remind Siddhu that though what he says is interesting but he can’t take things for granted just because he has a list of Sidduisms in his kitty and people have lapped him up as a good orator. The poor girl who seemed novice in the field had to bear the brunt and yes even after that she kept smiling in front of the camera. So things are not easy for women, be it any field. And if they are making a place for themselves, it is through hard work and not just cool looks!
