This is about an Italian woman Eluana, who was left in a vegetative state after a car crash in 1992. Since the last 17 years, she is comatose. Whether she should be allowed to die or not has sparked a nation wide crisis in Italy. Her nutrition was reduced by the doctors after a decade long court battle which her father claims is in accordance with her wishes.
However, the country’s Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi in consultation with Vatican issued a decree that food and water cannot be suspended for any patient and it would amount to murder. It was shocking to read that he added that her physical state is such that she can bear babies! How mean can one get to say such a thing to serve one’s own political purpose.
Eluana is now 38 year old and in my opinion, it is solely her right to decide about her life. If she doesn’t want to live noone else has a right to make her live in such a condition. Long back i was myself of the opinion that euthanasia is a crime but as i have matured, i have come to understand that it is okay to let the person die in peace. God forbid, if i was in such a vegetative state i would like my feeding tubes removed. I would not like to trouble my family. Sometimes i feel how lucky are those who die in their sleep without any prolonged illness. I would love to die like that if the choice be mine.
