Why do looks matter so much…
Susan Boyle’ notable performance in “Britain’s Got Talent” has sparked a debate about how it feels to be judged by your looks and what role appearances play in our society. It is true that even in this twenty-first century a lot depends on how you look and how much success you will achieve in your life on the basis of your looks.
A lot has been written on the virtues of having a loving heart, cheerful disposition but when it comes to reality, people give too much undue importance to looks. Agreed that being presentable will help you cast that significant first impression but beauty should not make you arrogant and dismissive of others. As they say, “Beauty fades, but a good heart will endure forever”.
And on the top of that if age is not on your side, then it becomes even more difficult to make a decent living. In addition, gender biases also play important role. A 60-year-old woman is considered old, a 60-year-old man is considered experienced. If you have faced a problem with your looks in the childhood, it stays with you throughout your life. It is very difficult to recover from how you were treated as a child. I have a couple of crooked teeth and i am still conscious of it. It stays with you forever.
It is important for modern day parents to teach their kids the right kind of values. Kids have to understand that actions rather than looks are important and help you succeed in life. Even if your child is exceptionally beautiful, never make her feel that she has an upper hand in the society just because she is beautiful. Stress that good acts and virtues matter most.
These days the media and the film industry have hyped the concept of good looks. If you are an average looker, you have no place in the industry. There is a penchant for good looks in the corporate world too. Situations when employees with good looks get undue favours in the corporate environment are not uncommon. The advertisements on the television implicitly state that having good looks is the be all and end all for everything. On the top of it, the lure of beauty pageants has forced many a girl to even go under the knife.
The sprouting of gyms in every nook and corner of the cities has reinforced the fact that a good looking body is equally in vogue. Obese people are subject to harassment by peers and often are considered lazy, sloppy and incompetent. Though it is good to keep yourself in shape. Though i still can’t understand how wise it is for someone fat to be labeled a social outcast. I enrolled for power yoga classes after childbirth and was amazed to see that the yoga instructor was an obese lady. Just when i was wondering about how she would be able to teach a complex thing as yoga steps which involve full body movements, she started off with the steps so swiftly that i all my doubts were cleared. She had overcome her fear of being called fat in the society and took to something that was satisfying for her.
I think in every society, there should be equal right for all the citizens in spite of their looks, colour, and physique.
